College of the Holy Cross STARTALK Teachers Program

Read-On: Teaching Reading Literacy in Chinese

10-day residential program

July 21 – 30, 2017 (Arrive 7/20, Depart 7/31)

 

Eligibility: Experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) at the middle school, high school, or college level, and teachers in Chinese immersion programs in grades 3-8. Applicants must be US citizens or legal residents, with at least 2 years of full-time experience teaching CFL in American classrooms who will be teaching CFL in the US in the 2017-2018 academic year. Teachers in grades 3-5 must be teaching in Chinese immersion programs.

Goals: To develop level-appropriate web-based materials incorporating strategies to enhance higher level literacy skills for CFL learners in grades 3 through college.

Professional Development: Seminars with national leaders in the field of CFL learning and literacy development. Collaboration with CFL instructors from across the US to address reading comprehension and articulation of instruction across grade levels.

Time/Place: 10-day residential program, July 21- July 30, 2017 (Arrival 7/20, Depart 7/31) at College of the

Holy Cross, Worcester MA. Participants will be ‘on-task’ for 10 hours/day for a total of 90 hours and in addition will engage in several pre-program Skype meetings with their grade level team members.

Support: Full support for round-trip travel between home institution and the College of the Holy Cross, on-site meals (including daily dinners at area restaurants), and single occupancy accommodation in air-conditioned apartment-style dormitories. We cannot accommodate family members or companions.
