It’s that time of the year again, voting for our new board members for CLASS!

The CLASS Election Committee 2024 has prepared a ballot for you to vote on. Each CLASS member who renewed their CLASS membership or joined CLASS before April 1, 2024, is eligible to vote. The voting window will be open on Friday, October 4, 2024, and will be closed on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at 12:00 midnight Eastern Daylight Saving Time.

The following candidate was nominated by the CLASS Board.

Brenda Hsu 徐玺雅

Ms. Hsu is an accomplished Chinese language teacher with 17 years of experience in public schools in the Chicago area. She currently teaches fifth to eighth-grade Chinese classes at Wilmette Public Schools in Wilmette, Illinois. Ms. Hsu began her teaching career in Arlington Heights School District 25, where she established the middle school Chinese program and contributed to the development of the elementary FLEX program.  

Ms. Hsu is actively engaged with local and national teaching professional groups. She founded and served as the first president of the Midwest Taiwanese Mainstream Teachers Association. Additionally, she was the President of the Midwest Chinese Teachers Alliance from 2015 to 2017 and its executive director from 2017 to 2019. Ms. Hsu has been honored to serve on the CLASS board since 2017 and held the position of CLASS president in 2021.

Ms. Hsu is very grateful to be given this opportunity to run for the CLASS board member again. If she is elected, she would dedicate herself to further enhancing Chinese language education, fostering collaboration among teachers, and promoting innovative teaching practices. She looks forward to continuing her work in supporting the professional growth of educators and enriching the learning experiences of students.

Ying Zhang 张莹

Ying Zhang has been teaching Chinese at Montgomery Bell Academy at Nashville Tennessee since 2011. In teaching, she pursues learner-centered interactive classroom, immersive communicative instructions and relationship-focused learning community building. She creates opportunity to encourage learners to actively make efforts, take risks, make mistakes, and learn from their own and each other’s mistakes. In professional community, she serves on the board the Tennessee World Language Teaching Association.  

She is also active in school and community diversity and inclusion endeavors. She actively presents at local and national professional conferences. She serves at the school diversity and inclusion committee and works with local refugee and immigrants organizations to do services projects with students. She is in charge of overseas exchanges of Chinese program. She was awarded Outstanding Chinese Teacher of Year in 2023 by CLASS.
