Preliminary Report of the Fourth Chinese Bridge Speech Contest on the US West Coast for High School Students
The Fourth Chinese Bridge Speech Contest on the US West Coast for High School Students was successfully held in CLERC conference building in Santa Clara, CA on March 29, 2014. The contest was organized by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools and Chinese Language Education and Research Center. Sponsors of the event were the Education Section of the Consulate General of the PRC in San Francisco and Hanban. Also present at the contest were Counselor Yang Jun and Consul Li Renzhu from the Education Section of the Consulate General of PRC in San Francisco
Twelve finalists were invited to the contest. The finalists were selected from about 30 applications through a screening process based on the speech CDs submitted earlier. The contestants were grouped into two categories, Intermediate and Advanced. Students who have learned Chinese for less than four years are grouped in the Intermediate group and those with a learning experience of more than four years are grouped in the Advanced group. Anika Ullah from Monta Vista High School won the first prize of the Intermediate group, and Peter Carroll from The Branson School won the first prize in the Advanced group.
Twelve Chinese Zodiac signs numbered from 1 to 12 were prepared for contestants to pick as their speech number before the contest started.
