The ChinHuei Yeh Memorial Scholarship 葉金惠老師紀念獎學金       

Annual Application Period from September 1st through October 10th

The CLASS Awards Committee is delighted to announce the ChinHuei Yeh Memorial Scholarship for 2024. Ms. ChinHuei Yeh (葉金惠老師), a beloved past president and board member of CLASS, was a veteran teacher at Shrewsbury Public Schools in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts for over a decade, prior to that, she taught at a heritage Chinese School for 15 years. Yeh Laoshi was also a well-known, highly respected teacher-educator for instructional technology throughout the United States and overseas. Her dedication to her students, her drive for innovation, and her love for teaching set her apart as an outstanding educator and mentor.  

 

The Chinhuei Yeh Memorial Scholarship was established in 2022 by the Yeh family to fund a first-time attendee to the ACTFL Convention. Having been able to participate in the ACTFL conference early in her career, Yeh laoshi understood how impactful such a professional development experience could be for a beginning educator. In her memory, CLASS would like to honor her through this scholarship. All members of CLASS, except for current CLASS officers and members of the elected Board of Directors, are eligible for this scholarship. The recipient award ceremony will be held at the annual CLASS Luncheon on Saturday, November 23, 2024, which is held in conjunction with the 2024 ACTFL Convention in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia from November 22 through November 24, 2024. This scholarship will fund a first-time attendee to the ACTFL/CLASS Convention in November each year with partial coverage for the ACTFL Convention registration fee and travel or lodging expenses. 

To apply, please submit the following materials/documents in one application package by October 10, 2024 via a Google form at https://forms.gle/tgmCVna2Ez2xZgW88 

 

(1) A cover letter indicating the applicant’s personal information such as name, address, school name and address, principal’s name and email contact, and proof of the applicant’s class membership in the current year of the application. A CLASS member card can be printed out through your personal account on the CLASS membership site.

(2) An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae that indicates total years of service in the Chinese teaching field and employment history.

(3) One letter of recommendation from the school administrator.

(4) Reasons for applying

As a first-time attendee, please explain in no more than 150 words how you think participating in the ACTFL/CLASS Convention will benefit your teaching in the classroom.

(5) Statement to continue Yeh Laoshi’s legacy:

Yeh laoshi tirelessly provided proficiency-based language instruction to her students in school, utilizing technology as a tool for teaching and constantly striving to learn new tools and skills for use in the classroom. She was deeply committed to sharing her expertise with fellow teachers at conferences and other professional development events.

Please write a one-page statement in response to the following questions.

(1) How would you honor Yeh Laoshi’s legacy in your teaching?

(2) Would you consider participating in this year’s CLASS SWAP session by sharing one of your teaching activities in 5-10 minutes? 

(3) How would you be sharing your thoughts after the convention with CLASS members?

(4) Would you consider submitting a proposal for next year’s CLASS/ACTFL Convention?

Please submit your application materials/documents by October 10, 2024. Please note that any application with missing documents will not be accepted. The scholarship recipient will be notified via e-mail by October 20, 2024. The scholarship recipient is responsible for registration and making his/her own travel arrangements to attend the CLASS-sponsored sessions at the 2024 ACTFLConvention in Pennsylvania.
